David Brooks on California's golden age
David Brooks, in a New York Times editorial, recasts the California of 1911-1960 as a city on a hill for the state to follow today. A restoration to pro-market progressivism in support of immigrant entrepreneurs is his way to prosperity and salvation from government bankruptcy. He does a really good job of it, too, since most of his readers won't remember the old California except from the old Hollywood movies like John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, which he references in the title: Tom Joad Gave Up. At that time, thousands streamed into California to find work. Now, thousands stream out of California to find work. What changed?
